Common drywall problems

Several common drywall problems can affect homes. A homeowner can learn how to repair them with the right techniques and materials. However, it is important to hire a professional for large drywall repairs.

Water exposure is one of the most common drywall problems. Water damage can cause mold growth and mildew. Depending on the extent of the damage, you may have to replace the drywall.

Nail popping is another common drywall problem. Nails can pop out of studs when the drywall is not fastened tightly. This can be caused by framing lumber shrinking or by an object striking the wall. Nail popping can be prevented by using high-quality lumber and using more nails on each stud.

When a nail pops, it can dimple the drywall surface. If you see a nail pop, you can try to fix the nail with sanding or joint compound. If the drywall fastener is broken, it should be removed and replaced.

DIY Drywall Repair Tips

A common problem that occurs when you are doing drywall repair is pin hole leaks. If you notice a small hole in a corner that is not secured with drywall screws or other mounting components, it is often possible to repair the leak by covering the area with a small piece of plywood, sand paper, or felt. You will then use a repair kit to cover the hole while painting the exposed wood.

Sometimes, drywall repairs may need to be performed because they have caused water damage to the interior surface of your home. This may need to be addressed before your next homeowner's sale. The most common causes of water damage are plumbing leaks, faulty wiring, or problems with the drainage system of your house.

There are two types of drywall repair techniques you can perform: wet or dry. Wet repairs involve the restoration of damaged or missing drywall. For example, if you have damaged the left over material from a wall that was damaged by water, but the drywall is still intact, you can easily replace the missing drywall by excavating the damaged area and lifting it out with a hammer.

Then, using wood glue or caulking, you will mend the damaged surface to the subframe. On the other hand, drywall repairs involve the repairing of damaged or missing sheetrock. For example, if you notice some cracks in your ceiling due to water damage, but the sheetrock portion of your ceiling is intact, you can easily repair the cracked portions by cutting out the affected area and cementing them in place.

Once the repaired area is ready, it is time for you to seal it. In order to do so, you will need to apply a joint compound to the new piece. The application process will depend on the type of repair you performed - wet or dry. However, make sure that you cover both the new piece and the damaged one with a water-resistant sealant before sealing it. This will prevent moisture from seeping into the house from the damaged area and deteriorating the rest of the drywall, which you are trying dearest to fix yourself.
